Foshkos Xmas

I’d like to mark this holiday with the official beginning of my new endeavor, Foshkos. A group of art school friends and I am starting a place where we can entertain you with comic strips, games, apps, ebooks, and lots more. Above is the first illustration I have done for the group. Toy Maker…and cat.

Here’s a quick one today. It’s a character design for a coloring book, that probably happened, but I never saw the end result. The idea was to create a look for a Toy Maker and his pet cat (I forget the cat’s name). Long story short, the client wanted a fatter Toy Maker, I did that sketch (not sure where that is these days) and then I didn’t hear anything more. Why would you want a fat Toy Maker anyway? A Fat Candy Maker sure, but a fat Toy Maker?
Who knows?
I did get paid for what was done, but I would have liked to do a full coloring book. Perhaps another time.

Unfinished Comics

Many of my recent postings deal with projects that for one reason or another didn’t make it to the final stage. Well, here’s one more of those. A friend contacted me about one of their friends being interested in doing a graphic novel. We’ll call that guy Jim…for no reason other than I don’t really remember his name. So, Jim had an entire graphic novel (about 90-100 pages) written and was looking for an artist. Our mutual friend put us in contact with each other and I said I was interested in the project. Jim offered to pay for the artwork, which was nice, and that if it went anywhere we’d do more work together. So, I said let me read some of the script, I’ll do a sample page and then we can make revisions, adjustments, work on a timeline, figure out the whole thing. We agree and Jim sends me the script. It’s good stuff. Crime, noir-ish. Set in Philly area. I forget the title, but it was something to do with Gentlemen (because that’s what I named the file). I’m on board. I do the one page sample (posted here) and sent it off. A day or so later Jim calls me and gets my voicemail (don’t remember what i was doing), but he says he likes it, has some ideas and wants to work on a few things. I think “Cool. Let’s get this thing going”. I call him back and get his voicemail. I leave a message saying “Sorry i missed your call. Sounds good. give me a call and let’s discuss.” A couple days later Jim calls me again and again I was unavailable (probably doing something important like organizing my sock drawer) and he leaves a message saying, “Hey sorry we keep playing phone tag. I’m going through some stuff, but I want to get this thing going. Give me a call”. I understand stuff happens and going through it can be tough. So, I call him back probably an hour or so later and get his voicemail. Again, I say the same thing, “Sorry. Phone tag, blah blah blah, give me a call”. And that’s it. That’s how the story ends. Jim never called back. I never heard anything from him again. Sorry, there isn’t a better ending. Sometimes things just

Fishy tank sketches

Here are a few more sketches for some didn’t-make-it-to-shelf products. The task was to create some concepts for some fun fish tanks and accessories. I went with a pirate theme and a graveyard theme…because I find them to be fun. The sketches include ideas for a tank, some little statue-like pieces, a background and some decals to add to the tank itself. The worst part about this project is I have no idea why this stuff was killed before it got any further. Just happens sometimes I suppose.

Back from the Past

Here’s an ooooooooollllldddd illustration I did. It’s acrylic and some airbrush (mostly the sky). So, this is an illustration for the concept of “Hunter” and “Prey”. Not for a specific title or story. Just the concept. This took a ton of hours (which was tough considering I was in Art School and working part-time at the time).
Perhaps the biggest compliment I received from this piece came from the frontman of the band GWAR. Me and some of my friends decided to rent a table at a comic book show in NYC ( it was a smaller one in an old church). Well, the band GWAR happened to be there promoting there comic book stuff. My friends and I were trying to get our work out there and looking for gigs, but mostly ended up talking to each other rather than prospective clients. At least until the giant, perverse puppet-like creature, Oderus Urungus walked up to our table. He looked over our table and all the works, paused, pointed to the little fuzzy guy in the foreground of this illustration and proclaimed a sexual interest in it. He moved on and me and my friends looked at each other in disbelief and laughed.
One of my proudest moments, to say the least.

Fashion Show

Here are a couple of pieces I did for a pitch to a Health & Beauty client. The big piece is called a “technical”. Used to show stylists a new…style. It includes a bunch of pencil sketches I did (from photo reference). Also included are a couple of flare pieces. They are sketches that I brought into PhotoShop to add some color and “attitude”. This stuff is not really my forte, but it’s always fun trying out some new stuff and stretching those unused fashion muscles.

Science Kit packaging concepts

Sometimes I do some concept sketches for companies that get used and made into the actual thing (like the toy packaging for Spider-man 3 for Hasbro)…don’t blame me for the movie stuff though.
Anyway, sometimes I do sketches and they don’t get used. The nerve right? I still get paid, which is nice, but I thought instead of this going to waste I could share some of those things here.
These concepts were for a Arts & Crafts company (which will rename nameless) that was considering doing some kid’s science kits for making soda. Sounds like fun. These sketches were fun, but alas this project died before it had a chance to give any overzealous kid a bellyache.

How-to-comics thing

So, from time to time people contact me through this site to do some work. Well, here is a cover and a how-to-panel-by-panel thing I did for one such project. The panel-by-panel shows the pencil stage, ink stage, and the color stage. Basic stuff. And the cover? Well, it’s a cover. Everything was done in blue pencil first, then inked by brush (mostly) and colors were done in Photoshop. Oh, and text was done in Illustrator.
